Revised Common Lectionary Permissions Policy

The following permissions policy is provided as an introductory guide for those who wish to quote or reprint the Revised Common Lectionary prepared by the Consultation on Common Texts [CCT].

The Revised Common Lectionary [RCL] is a three-year table of scripture reading and psalm citations for Christian worship on Sundays and festivals. The complete table of citations is published in The Revised Common Lectionary (Abingdon, 1992).

The RCL table of citations may be quoted and/or reproduced by individual congregations and similar non-profit, non-commercial groups without express written permission of the copyright holder, provided that the reproductions are not for sale and are for the groups own worship and educational activities. Examples include congregational newsletters, congregational worship resources, and congregational Web sites.

The RCL table of citations may also be quoted and/or reproduced without express written permission of the copyright holder in for-sale materials, provided that materials quoting the RCL are developed and disseminated by current CCT member denominations or their designated publishers. Examples include official church publications, periodicals, liturgical resources such as hymnals, devotionals, preaching helps, and curriculum.

Although the aforementioned uses do not require written permission, the following copyright notice must be included with all reproductions:

Revised Common Lectionary, Copyright © 1992 Consultation on Common Texts. Used by permission.

(Because the RCL is a table of citations, it does not include biblical texts or translations. Permission to reproduce copyrighted biblical texts and translations is subject to the policies of copyright holders for particular versions of the Bible.)

Other denominations, publishers, and organizations that wish to include the RCL table of citations or excerpts thereof in print or electronic resources, including Web-based and any other form of delivery, must obtain written permission from the Consultation on Common Texts through its copyright administrator, Augsburg Fortress.
